SMB Use of Quantum Computing

September 11, 2025

Quantum computing is a promising technology, which could reach technical maturity within just a few years. At the moment, typical use scenarios are enterprises or governments doing drug discovery, climate modeling, cryptography, chemistry, logistics, and other highly compute-intensive applications where classical computers struggle.

To find out if SMBs are testing the waters with quantum, Bredin recently surveyed 500 U.S. SMB principals.

First, we asked them their quantum usage status. Unsurprisingly, very few SMBs with fewer than 20 employees (very small businesses, or VSBs) are using or piloting quantum computing – only 8%. However, fully one in three small businesses (SBs, with 20 to 99 employees) and two in five midsized businesses (MBs, with 100 to 500 employees) are using or piloting it. This doesn’t mean, of course, that these companies are all installing on-premises quantum computers; they can use cloud-based services such as AWS Amazon Braket, IBM Quantum Platform, Microsoft Azure Quantum, and Nvidia Quantum Cloud.

SMB Quantum Computing Usage Stats

What is your business’s current status with quantum computing?

Quantum applications vary by company size. VSBs use quantum the most for customer experience and data analytics/machine learning. SBs are most likely to use it for machine learning, followed by security and encryption. MBs use it most for machine learning, followed by optimizing logistics such as supply chains and scheduling.
